Haiti:  An Urgent Call for Help

Sugar Grove United Methodist Church (176 Main Street) invites you to continue to respond to the earthquake victims in Haiti. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is now asking for BIRTHING and LAYETTE Kits. These should be prepared as instructed and brought to Sugar Grove UMC.

Birthing Kits Birthing kits provide the essential items to promote a safe, clean delivery and to encourage good aftercare.
Place these items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag:

  • One hotel-size bar of soap (1 oz. and up)
  • One pair of clean latex gloves
  • One square yard of clear 4 mil plastic sheeting
  • Three pieces of clean string each 12" long
  • One clean single use razor blade (carefully wrap the blade in paper or plastic to protect it and keep it from causing injury)
  • Two flannelette receiving blankets, each 1 square yard
All items included in kit must be NEW items.
Please enclose an envelope containing at least $1 for each kit to help with shipping. Do not include any personal notes or additional material in the kits.

Layette Kits Many women in Haiti do not have swaddling clothes with which to welcome their child into the world. Layette kits provide basic supplies for their baby's needs.

  • 6 cloth diapers
  • 2 shirts or 2 one-piece body suits
  • 2 baby washcloths
  • 2 gowns or sleepers
  • 2 diaper pins
  • 1 sweater open in the front
  • 2 receiving blankets
Bundle the items inside one of the receiving blankets and secure with the diaper pins.
All items in kit must be NEW items.
Do NOT include any personal notes or money or additional materials in these kits.

For questions, call the church at (630) 466-4501.
We are in need of more drivers to transport these supplies to the UMCOR warehouse in Chatham, Illinois (just south of Springfield). Call the church if you can help in this way.

People wanting to make financial donations can do so directly online at www.umcorhaiti.org for general Haiti relief or to www.intlchildcare.org to support relief efforts through Grace Children's Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Checks can also be made payable to "Sugar Grove UMC" , designating Haiti Relief  in the memo and mailed to Sugar Grove United Methodist Church,
P.O. Box 226, Sugar Grove, Illinois 60554.

The church is located one block west of Rt. 47 and one block south of Cross St., across from the Sugar Grove Community House. For questions, call the church at (630) 466-4501 or go to www.sgumc.net
